Here are a few impressions of Leicester itself away from the canal. Sadly, there were still some lockdown measures in places, so all museums, churches and similar places were still closed. It was a sightseeing tour of the outside spaces of Leicester only.

Trent & Mersey Canal - Starting the way home

Since my last post I have speeded up getting back to London, because I have now launched my RYA boat training business (in London) and am getting bookings in already. I am now on my way back down the Grand Union to London, but have a bit of catching up to do on the blog. In this post I am covering the Trent & Mersey Canal up to Fradley Junction, where I turned off.  My next post will cover the Coventry and Northern Oxford canals leading back to Braunston, where I joined the big old Grand Union canal once more. The "Great" Harecastle Tunnel ....

... or so the guidebook calls it. I had done two difficult long tunnels on this journey already, Blisworth and Braunston. Both are "wide" tunnels, where two narrowboats can pass each other. I am not a big fan of long tunnels, so the prospect of going through an equally long tunnel (2675m), but with only one-way traffic, because it's so narrow was not something I was looking forward to. Unfortunately on the route up the Trent & Mersey, there is no other option. The Harecastle tunnel was built by the already mentioned canal pioneer James Brindley in the very early days of canal building. It was built for one narrowboat only. As it takes about 45 min to go through, this led to major congestion quickly. A second tunnel was built by Thomas Telford (another famous canal engineer of the later days) completed in 1827. Very mixed weather and lots of solo locking - Tring to Stoke Bruerne

After Sabine left me, my single-handing started in earnest. First of all it started with a day off as it rained most of the day. In the afternoon as the rain cleared, I cycled up to the Ashridge Estate. A hill that was quite challenging for a flatlander from London. But I was rewarded with the most amazing bluebell carpets. Ashridge Estate. The canal is somewhere behind the white building centre-left. So the next day I pushed on. I was aiming to catch up with the Idle Women tour again in Stoke Bruerne on the weekend. The first feature of the day was the Marsworth locks, six in a row. I was lucky to be able to share the locks with a local boater, who also had a few tips for me. Mid-lock flight we were also joined by two lock volunteers, who did everything for us. Just sit back, relax and occasionally potter on to the next lock. Amazing! First time on this trip sharing a lock I did another 8 locks on the day and all of these sadly on my own. It was very pretty though ...
